World Cup USA in 2018 or 2022
By Sean Garrison
With the 2010 FIFA World Cup approaching in less than two months, Americans once again have soccer on their minds. Their attention can be attributed to the popular belief that this year will be Team USA's best chance to bring home their very first World Cup. While many Americans might only think about soccer during major events like the World Cup, the majority of countries around the world fiendishly follow the sport year-round. U.S. soccer fanatics are glad that their favorite sport is finally gaining some respect domestically, but Doug Band feels that even more popularity can be gained by bringing the World Cup to America.
President Clinton's personal advisor, Doug Band, recently obliged a request to join the Board of Directors for the United States Bid Committee. The committee aspires to bring the FIFA World Cup to the U.S. as soon as 2018. With the addition of Doug Band's support, the committee hopes to increase their chances of bringing the most widely followed international tournament to American soil. This is a huge opportunity for the United States to bring together many cultures that all have great interest in the sport. If the United States wins the bid; it would surely be a boost to their international image.
Band is a fantastic addition to the U.S. committee, not only because he's an avid fan of the game, but also because he realizes how this sport can unify disparate cultures and people. Because of the extensive work Doug Band has done with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), he has garnered valuable experience in foreign relations. Along with former President Clinton, Band founded the CGI in 2005. Since then, CGI has reached out to millions across the globe by providing medical assistance, education opportunities, and environmental protection. The U.S. bid committee is determined to obtain their goal of a U.S. World Cup, and are fastidiously working to make that goal a reality. With Band's arrival, they now have a figure that understands the gravity of such a world event and wants to bring its cultural significance to America.

Korea 100% In Asia But Could Do Better
But in the Land of the Morning Calm, it has been a comfortable, stress-free progression. Pohang Steelers, Suwon Bluewings, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and Jeonbuk Motors are all through to the round of sixteen having played just five of the six group games.
It is an impressive achievement to see all four progress unscathed but actually, it could have been better. The top two teams from each of the eight groups progress to the knockout stage but not all are equal. Finishing in first place ensures that the one-off game in the next round is played at home. Finishing second means a journey elsewhere.
Seongnam is the best-placed and is already certain of a home tie. The Yellows can sit back and see who will finish first or second in Group G. At the moment, that is Suwon Bluewings. It remains to be seen if either team will welcome meeting such a familiar foe on the continental stage. The local media certainly will.
Suwon’s players are kicking themselves that they are not currently occupying top spot instead of Gamba Osaka. In last week’s match in Japan, Suwon was level at 1-1 with seconds remaining until the defenders somehow let Gamba’s 17 year-old striker Takashi Usami score the decisive goal. The 2-1 win puts the J-League team in pole position.
"I thought we were heading home with one point in our hand,” lamented Suwon coach Cha Bum-keun who is lamenting often these days. “But our players seemed to have lost their concentration in the last part of the game. We gave up their first goal so easily and so soon after our first goal, and that hurt us. We want to play at home in the round of 16 but … that possibility seems to have become smaller.”
Suwon is a team that has been struggling of late with Asia being the only bright spot of what is becoming another dismal season at home. Three successive defeats in the K-League, including a painful 3-0 loss at the home of bitter rivals FC Seoul and a 2-1 defeat at home to Seongnam, preceded the Osaka disappointmen and then one followed. Unless the Japanese lose in China next week and Suwon defeat Singapore Armed Forces, Suwon will be making the short trip across Gyeonggi Province.
Jeonbuk Motors is another team that is likely to finish second after conceding a last-minute goal to a Japanese team. Kashima Antlers won 2-1 in Jeonju in March and the K-League champions have been playing catch-up ever since. Both are through to the last 16 but if Jeonbuk, who won the competition in 2006, want to play at home in the next round, it has to win at the home of the Japanese champion.
“We want to avenge the defeat in Kashima,” said Jeonbuk coach Choi Kang-hee after the match and added. “I know that is going to be a difficult away game but we will use the best of what we have to get a victory. I have plans for that.”
If Jeonbuk don’t manage to get the result in Ibaraki next week then a long trip to South Australia to take on Adelaide United is on the cards. But if things go differently, a game against Pohang Steelers and a Jeolla and Gyeongsang Province match-up is a distinct possibility. All four Korean teams playing each other in the round of sixteen would be something to see.

Urawa Reds march to the summit
The J. League giants brushed aside Kawasaki Frontale 3-0 in front of 46,313 supporters at Saitama Stadium, with early goals from midfielder Hajime Hosogai and diminutive striker Tatsuya Tanaka setting the home team on their way.
Hosogai took advantage of some poor Kawasaki defending to chest a loose ball down on the edge of the penalty area, and while he directed his half-volley straight at Eiji Kawashima, the Japan no. 2 could only manage to deflect the ball into the top corner on its way in.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors soon after, as Tatsuya Tanaka embarked on a mazy run from midfield before unleashing a piledriver that flashed into the top corner of the goal, with the superb strike no doubt putting Japan coach Takeshi Okada on notice.
With talisman Kengo Nakamura on the bench as he continued his recovery from a broken jaw, Kawasaki almost cut the deficit as Masaru Kurotsu's long-range strike looped off a defender and clattered against the post.
The Kanagawa side went even closer just minutes later as defender Yusuke Igawa bundled home, only to have his effort incorrectly ruled out for offside.
In what was the most highly-charged of encounters, Kawasaki though they had found a way back into the game shortly after the restart, as they were awarded a penalty following Wilfried Sanou's clumsy foul on North Korean international Chong Tese.
However Urawa goalkeeper Norihiro Yamagishi proved tough to beat from twelve yards, as he guessed correctly to fling himself to his right and keep out Renatinho's low spot-kick.
The stage was set for a final Urawa goal and it came from the unlikeliest of sources, as substitute Satoshi Horinouchi tapped home after Kawashima could only parry Edmilson's curling right-foot strike.
"I think we're on the right track, regardless of what anyone thinks and today's result and performance back that up," Urawa coach Finke told The Daily Yomiuri after the match.
"The two early goals certainly helped and I think given the way we were playing, the third goal was just a matter of time."
Urawa leapfrogged Shimizu S-Pulse into top spot in the standings, although the Shizuoka side remain the only unbeaten team left following their 1-1 draw away at Gamba Osaka on Saturday.
Veteran Gamba midfielder Tomokazu Myojin opened the scoring for the Kansai side at a packed Expo '70 Stadium in Osaka, however Japan striker Shinji Okazaki equalised with a deflected effort midway through the second half.
J2
Relegated sides Kashiwa Reysol, Oita Trinita and JEF United have all made bright starts to life in the second tier, with Kashiwa looking the team to beat after seven rounds of action.
Brazilian coach Nelsinho's team are the only unbeaten side left in the division, after the Sun Kings comfortably dispatched of Sagan Tosu 2-0 at Kashiwa Hitachi Stadium in Chiba.
Oita Trinita thumped Thespa Kusatsu 3-1 away from home, however JEF United slumped to a disappointing 2-1 loss in front of more than 7,500 fans at Momotaro Stadium in the west of Japan, as the visitors went down 2-1 away at Fagiano Okayama.
The Shikoku derby finished scoreless - to the disappointment of the 11,115 fans who turned out at Pocari Sweat Stadium - with local rivals Tokushima Vortis and Ehime FC forced to share the spoils in a hard-fought encounter.
Kashiwa Reysol lead the nascent standings from Oita Trinita, with surprise package Roasso Kumamoto currently lying in third place in the table.

World Cup Ticket Chaos in Cape Town
After being told by FIFA that there were tickets for all games, people who had been queuing from 0700 finally got to the counter at around 1400 to be told that only Category 1 tickets were available for some games.
My wife queued all day and bought nothing as only the minor games were available.
She saw a couple of gangster type guys right at the front of the queue producing ID books for 10 people and claiming 10 tickets on each ID book, obviously for touting later.
The computers could not cope and very few people were served per hour.
Police wrere called to control disgruntled fans in Johannesburg and at the FIFA Ticketing offices in CPT.
In my opinion FIFA's ticketing scheme is bullshit:
a. getting people ( myself included ) to buy tickets when they don't know which teams they will get.b. bringing more tickets on to the market in phases and inferring there is a scarcity,
c. not keeping people informed and not being able to reply promptly to queries.
FIFA and everyone involved with them are not getting ( and don't deserve) good press over here in South Africa.
In short - a bunch of bandits.

Liverpool V Benfica – Dr Joel Rookwood
The red half of Merseyside is finally beginning to warm to the Europa League. It may be the last competition Liverpool wanted to win when the campaign kicked off in August, but with all other possibilities severed, the consolation cup is looking an increasingly attractive proposition. Its Channel 5 broadcasting, Thursday matches, multiple officials, stupid kick off times and involvement of Everton have not done wonders for its reputation amongst the Premier League’s elite. Yet no team has won it four times, with three-time winners Liverpool now favourites to do just that in Hamburg on May 12th. Cue cheekily edited prophetic banner:
Following a dismal Champions League campaign, relegation to the Europa League saw forgettable ties against Hungarian minnows and French also-rans. But in Portuguese league leaders Benfica, the quarter-final presented Liverpool with a first real European test of 2010. Despite losing the away leg, the tie was evenly balanced at 2-1. The once legendary Lisbon outfit had annoyed Liverpool supporters with the manner of victory in the Stadium of Light however, and so when they travelled to the Ground of Noise, the away team and their supporters were dealt a lesson or two. Where eagles dare, Scousers drown. It was not simply off the pitch that Anfield impressed however. Benitez’s side were simply sublime on it. Benfica were the side Liverpool would have wanted to avoid in the draw, but having been pitted against a very good Portuguese side, Liverpool controlled the match throughout. A brave header from every blind girl’s pin-up hunk Dirk Kuyt gave Liverpool a deserved lead.
Kopites rubbed their eyes six minutes later as what can only be described as Lucas Leiva effortlessly rounded Julio Cesar to double Liverpool’s advantage. The second half however was all about one man: Fernando Torres. He finished off a move that began in the arms of Pepe Reina and featured the majestic Mascherano, the brilliant Benayoun and the Klipspringer Kuyt. Five passes from goal to goal. A subsequent Cardozo freekick threatened to alter the complexion of the tie but Torres’s second goal twelve minutes later rendered the Paraguayan’s effort consolatory, ensuring Liverpool’s passage to the semi-final in the process. Liverpool will now travel to the Vicente Calderon where Torres will face his boyhood heroes in the Spanish capital. It was not the Madrid fixture we dreamt of, but overcoming Athletico would secure a third European final in Benitez’s sixth season as Liverpool manager. Going one step further and beating probable opponents Hamburg in their own ground would make Liverpool the most successful UEFA Cup (sic) team in history. Domestic failures cannot be dismissed with this prospect, but it does at least demand a reframed perspective. Unfazed, Benitez walks on.
Time Running Out For Injured Korean Stars
That tournament looms large on the horizon of Yeom Ki-hun.The Suwon attacker hasn’t yet played a game for his new club since arriving in Gyeonggi Province from Ulsan Horang-I in the off-season. The likeable 27 year-old is battling through an annual problem – injury. He needs to start playing very soon if he is to take one of the 23 seats on the plane that leaves Incheon International Airport in late May.
Yeom, who still bears the scars from a serious automobile accident in 2006, rarely plays a full season. A series of physical problems have blighted his career and prevented him, perhaps, from becoming the star he could have been. The latest setback came in February when he fractured a bone in his foot during training with the national team at the East Asian Championships.
It was a cruel blow for the player and the former Ulsan star, who has played 30 times for the Taeguk Warriors, is keen to get back on the pitch to show what he can do. “I haven’t given up on going to the World Cup. The operation went well and at the moment, I am feeling good,” Yeom told local media in March.
“My recovery is coming on leaps and bounds,” he added. “My strong points are such things as taking free-kicks, crossing and shooting. If I show that I am at my best, opportunities should come my way."
Yeom expects to be back around the middle of this month and that is looking a little optimistic and is cutting it fine. Assuming he does return on schedule, and with this versatile attacker you can never be sure, it doesn’t give him much time to get himself back to match fitness and build his stamina.
National team coach Huh Jung-moo has an exhibition match in Seoul against Ecuador planned on May 16 – the only game in the Land of the Morning Calm before the big event – and the selected stars will get together on May 9. If Yeom is not in that roster then it all will be too late.
The same applies to Seol Ki-hyeon, another winger who can play on either side or even in the middle. The former English Premier League star left Fulham in the winter to come and play for Pohang Steelers. At the age of 31, he had never played in the K-League in his career and he still hasn’t. A knee injury that didn’t seem to serious at first has dragged on.
At almost every press conference early in the season, Pohang boss Waldemar Lemos told reporters that the player was almost ready but then in late March, it was revealed that ‘The Sniper’ has gone under the knife. It wasn’t a big operation so Seol could be back this month but if he wants to go the World Cup, (and who doesn’t?) he needs to be back, fit and playing well as soon as possible.
In truth it doesn’t look good for either, especially Seol, but at least they will be in good company with the likes of David Beckham of England and Spain’s Cesc Fabregas also likely to be watching the tournament from the sidelines.

Can Argentina Win The World Cup?
An incredible finale to the penultimate match against bottom side Peru saw the Peruvians score in the last minute to make it 1-1 and put Argentina in real peril. Then in biblical storms, Martin Palermo scored an offside looking 93rd minute winner to send the home crowd into frenzy. Unbelievably, straight from the kick off, Peru player, Juan Vargas, launched the ball at goal and forced the home keeper to tip it onto the bar. Argentina were seconds, a flag, or a glove away from total disaster.
The latter stages of a World Cup generally sees the usual suspects battling it out for the big prize. How many times have an average German team made the final? Aside from Messi, Argentina can boast the likes of Carlos Tevez (currently inspiring Manchester City to Champions League qualification), Gonzalo Higuain (locked in a goalscoring battle with Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid), Diego Millito (firing the goals for Inter Milan), and a rejuvenated Juan Sebastian Veron providing the ammunition for this potent strikeforce.
And then of course there is Sergio Aguero - Maradonna's son-in-law and heir apparent to Messi and perhaps Maradonna himself. Aguero is a player of real talent and every world cup sees the emergence of a new world star - Aguero could be the one this time around.
Their weakness is in defence but with the protection of Javier Mascherano sat in front (potentially alongside Esteban Cambiasso) the leaks can be plugged, providing a solid and uncompromising platform for their exciting forwards to wreak havoc.
The bookies have Argentina as fourth favourites and really they could be anything under Maradonna. This is what makes the story so appealing and it will be fascinating to watch in what promises to be just one of many sub plots in South Africa this summer.

Sporting predictions by Chris Clegg
Hope you all got on last time out? Below was the five-way wager of the weekend:
Sunderland to beat Brum @ Evs; Spurs to win at Stoke @ 21/20; Pompey to hump Hull @ Evs; Arsenal to beat West Ham @ 1/5 and Wigan to beat Burnley @ 7/10. The five-wayer pays over £160 for a tenner.
Stick with me, punters, next time this year we'll be millionaires!!! Or is it this time, next year? Either way, have a butchers at this week's...
All Square at Old Trafford?
What an early kick-off we have in store on Saturday at Old Trafford as Carlo's lot visit from London. Of course, this would have been the battle of the sharp-shooters had the Roondog not hurt his ankle in Tuesday's fight with zee Germans. Luckily for England fans, he should be back for the summer's world war. The Drogdog will be playing though, despite the fact that Chelsea really didn't need him last time out in their demolition of JLS (Aston) Villa. As the booookies predict, this one will be close, closer than close. The draw is 21/10 and I think it's nailed on.
Black Coffee serving at the Emirates
Down at The Emirates, Arsenal entertain the Wolves, without Cesc Fabregas it would appear. Arsenal without Cesc are like coffee without sugar - it just doesn't taste right but you drink it if you have to. Arsenal won't taste very good without their sweet star which is a shame as they also lost their milk earlier in the season. Had van Persie and Fabregas been fit throughout the season, the coffee would have gone down a treat and Arsenal may have just been topping the table. So it's a strong black at the Emirates which will be suffice to tame the Wolves. Home win @ 1/6 methinks.
Everybody in love?
Up at the Reebok, JLS will be performing as Aston visits the Wanderers. Villa will want to bounce back from their heavy defeat last week but if Bolton put their Marigolds on, JLS will struggle to Beat Bolton Again. Put your hands up if you're backing another draw at 9/4? The home win is also tempting at 2/1.
Inconsistent Pompey
Down on the south coast, Pompey entertain , well they play against, Blackburn. Away from home, Rovers are about as consistent as my nan's custard and may just serve up Pompey's seventh win of the season. Home win here. 21/10 is very generous.
Take a nap at the Britannia
At the Britannia, Stoke could jump above Blackburn into the top ten if they see off Hull. Sorry, when they see off Hull. This is the nap of the day – well, if you watch it you'll fall asleep. Boring home win at the Potteries (4/5).
Share and Share alike at the Stadium of Light
Up in the North East, Sunderland play host to Spurs and Tottenham can cement their 4 th Champion's league position with a victory. Having said that, the Black cats have sharpened their claws recently and Bent, Darren, has found his footing once again. So many close encounters this weekend and this one will be no different. Share of the spoils between Bruce and Harry (23/10). Sunderland are 5/2 if you're tempted by a home win?
Moor Shocks on the Turf
Last but not least on Saturday, Moor football in Burnley as Manchester City are visiting. The home win is very tempting at 4/1 and Burnley fans will be piling in. City are horrendous value at 7/10. The result of this one will depend on which Manchester will turn up. Like my nan's gravy, City are not as smooth as they should be. A loss on Saturday could see City 5 points off the sacred Champion's league positions come Saturday evening. A win for Burnley could bring them level on points with safety and "I've got a feeling (wooooohoooooo!!!)" that Saturday night will be a good night in Burnley as the 4/1 shot romps home. City will be crocked and shocked: Europa league for the Blues?
The Wicked Witch of West Ham
On Sunday, the not-so-happy Hammers travel up to Merseyside to face the Toffeemen. It has been a very sticky time for Zola of late and events at Upton Park are backing up the assertion that not all world-class players can become successful managers – Alan Shearer can vouch for that. Zola was a wizard on the pitch but is fast becoming the wicked witch of Wham. Many managers are waiting in the wings, claiming “I'm your man” to takeover the Claret-reins. Whoever it may be might just be a step closer on Saturday as Moyes' men inflict more misery on the Witches of East Ham. (2/5 the Toffees)
Super Sunday
Fulham Fairies flourish
The Wiganers are cottaging on Sunday, Craven thereof. Wigan are thirty goals worse-off than their London counterparts and this will show as Bobby Z and co go to town on their Northern rivals. It's not often Northerners lose out to Southern fairies, alas this will be one of those days. Big win for Fulham. Get on at Evens.
A Blue visit for the Reds
The last premiership game of the weekend is at St. Andrews and the Blues are handily priced at 19/5 to beat Liverpool. The Reds are a bit like my nan's cheese sauce: sometimes they look and taste great; other times they are a disgrace, make you feel sick and should never be allowed to be put out on the table...sorry, pitch. Still, regardless of how bad the cheese sauce is, nan's fans accept it and never tell her how bad it is, which makes the neutrals gob smacked! Rafa guaranteed fourth place a few weeks ago; Liverpool are now 4 points off the position and have played a game more than the team currently sitting there - Spurs. They'll have played another on Saturday and won't be any closer as another long shot comes in. Get on the home win at 19/5 to continue Brum's amazing campaign: they have only lost two games at home through the entire season.
Weekend Wagers
Trebles for Show
Chelsea Liverpool draw (21/10); Sunderland Spurs draw (23/10) and Bolton/Villa draw (9/4). In excess of £300 for a tenner. Oooooooh that's nice.
Doubles for Dough
Burnley to beat Man City (4/1) on Saturday and Birmingham to beat Liverpool (19/5) on Sunday. £240 back for a tenner. Larrrrrrvely.
