FIFA Womens World Cup 2011
Quarter-finals
Germany v Japan (Sat)
France v England (Sat)
Sweden v Australia (Sun)
Brazil v USA (Sun)
Norway, the 1995 World Cup winners and one of the traditional powers of the women's game, have missed out on the last eight of the tournament for the first time and also lost their chance to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. A 2-1 defeat to Australia in Leverkusen saw the Matildas advance ahead of them to a quarter-final clash with Sweden on Sunday.
The Swedes beat the USA, also by two goals to one, while Colombia and North Korea took their first points in a 0-0 dead rubber in Bochum. Brazil beat Equatorial Guinea 3-0 to set up an intriguing meeting with the Americans.
While the refereeing still leaves much to be desired, the crowds for the 2011 World Cup continue to impress. Over 23,000 watched the Swedish victory in Wolfsburg while almost 36,000 turned out in Frankfurt for Brazil's academic last group game.
Yesterday's scores:
Australia 2:1 Norway, 18,484 Leverkusen
Brazil 3:0 Equatorial Guinea, 35,859 Frankfurt
Sweden 2:1 USA, 23,468 Wolfsburg
Colombia 0:0 North Korea, 7,805 Bochum
